Kathleen Smith claims AUPE using SLAPP lawsuit designed to muzzle critics
Edmonton social media queen and occasional Beacon News contributor Kathleen Smith is being sued by Alberta’s largest union for tweets about a labour dispute at Artspace, a co-op housing program.
AUPE filed the lawsuit and claims that Kathleen Smith, Jason Tucker – a candidate for the Conservative nomination in the new federal riding of Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas – and an unidentified blogger made “false and defamatory statements” about the union and its job action against Artspace at 101A Avenue, Edmonton. Union members provide home care services for some residents through Supports for Artspace Independent Living (SAIL).
Okay, so this part is a bit confusing. It talks about "a labour dispute at Artspace, a co-op housing program."
I'm not sure what a "co-op housing program" is. Artspace is a co-op. Plain and simple. That could just be me nit-picking, though.
They are certainly accurate about this part: "...about the union and its job action against Artspace..." Despite the fact that Artspace is not the employer, SAIL is, the job action has been against all of Artspace.
For a response from AUPE, they had to go back to comments made to the media in July.
This is another media win. The article got the details right, tried to give at least something from AUPE as a response, and kept the focus in control.
I also appreciate that the address they gave was just the street, rather than the high rise. Artspace Housing Co-op is not just the high rise, and the townhouses, each have their own individual street number. It's just a little thing, but it did a better job of accurately portraying where Artspace is.
Unfortunately, it did not clarify that SAIL is the employer, while Artspace is not. Still, it's better that many others.
